I had a couple hours yesterday and all of today to do everything on this fiddle. It’s for my little sister so I’m doing it in non-work hours. It’s still gonna need a little touchup and set up, but I got it closed up at midnight tonight and it is basically done. Phew!
What do y’all think that date says?
If it’s from D.A. Stadlmann, it must be older than 1744. I see 1726.
Well, exactly. We’ve been trying to determine whether it is genuine. At first Marc though it said 1786, which would make it a definite fake, but now he thinks and I agree that it looks more like 1726. It’s VERY similar to an allegedly genuine label in his book of labels, and the fiddle looks very similar to a picture of an allegedly genuine one we found online. It’s had a neck graft, and is certainly old, and a nice instrument.
